What Does a Recording Session Look Like?

Kryoton Studios welcomes musical artists who immerse their listening audience with a positive vibe through inspiring lyrics and instrumentals. If you are new to Kryoton Studios, we may ask for song lyrics and additional information about your recording project prior to booking your session(s). Our specialty is recording acoustic instruments. We also use amplifiers (that you bring to the session) as needed for electric guitars and keyboards.

Recording takes place in one room for an open concept session where musicians and engineers work closely together. This concept mirrors how an orchestra, choir, or jazz band practices and performs. At the same time, the open concept feel allows musicians to feed off each other for those spontaneous moments that are hard to capture in overdubbing sessions. We understand that solo artists may need to overdub so, we understand it's necessary at times.

Each session centers around bringing out the natural tone quality of an instrument through proper microphone placement. This provides an opportunity for the musicians to explore wider dynamic ranges through making best use of a microphone’s capabilities. As an example, vocalists can learn to lean into, pull away from, or move from side to side to create their own effects and dynamics during the “performance” of a recording session. As much as possible, we create the “vibe” of a tune in a recording session through microphone and musician placement before the record button is pressed. In this type of setting, musicians can easily hear and respond to one another without the use of headphones.

When separation between musicians is needed, we make that possible. In general, the "bleed" between microphones creates a multi-dimensional fullness and richness of the overall sound within the group.  Al Schmitt famously said, “embrace the bleed.” He used bleeding between microphones to enhance the tonal depth of a recording, which is what made him a 23-time Grammy award winning recording engineer and producer. It’s simply a matter of knowing where and how to place the microphones to create that multidimensional layer of tonal qualities for each soloist or group. You will see this play out in your recording session.

Recording and Studio Fees

Recording, mixing, and mastering fees are paid directly to the recording engineer, Dave Bjur. Studio rental, equipment rental, and assistant engineering fees are paid to Kryoton Studios and are the same rate for both off-site and in-studio recording sessions. Your date(s) will tentatively be booked upon Kryoton Studio’s agreement to take on your project. Once 50% of the estimated invoice is prepaid, your recording date(s) is solidified.

Head Engineer Fees - $50 per hour

Dave Bjur’s engineering fees are paid directly to him. Upon acceptance of your project, you'll work directly with Dave to determine how and when to pay for your sessions. For off-site sessions, Dave generally provides a package deal that includes travel, set-up, recording the event, and take-down. You'll be responsible for securing the off-site location at your own expense.

Studio Rental and Assistant Engineering Fees - $20 per hour

  • Off-site recording sessions require an assistant engineer (Del Hungerford). Fees (including equipment rental) are paid directly to Kryoton Studios and include both set-up and take-down time.
  • In-studio projects include studio space and equipment rental fees and are paid directly to Kryoton Studios. Del acts as the hostess, providing snacks (often homemade) to make your recording session more enjoyable.
  • Payment. ALL fees must be paid in full before final mastered files are sent to you.
